What to look for when hiring a cleaning company

You are giving strangers access to your home or office, often when you are not there. It is entirely reasonable to ask hard questions first, and any decent company will have the answers ready.

The five questions

• Are your staff background-checked, and can I see certificates of good conduct?
• Do your cleaners carry company identification I can verify at the door?
• Are you insured, and what happens if something is damaged?
• Who supervises the job, and can I contact them directly?
• What is your policy if I'm not satisfied with the work?

What good answers sound like

Specific. A company that vets its staff will tell you how, and offer to show you the paperwork. One that doesn't will talk about trust and experience instead of producing anything.

On damage, look for a stated reporting window and a clear process, not a reassurance that it never happens. On dissatisfaction, look for a return-and-redo commitment with a time limit attached.

And be wary of a quote given over the phone for a job nobody has seen. It usually means either a padded price or a revision once the crew arrives and discovers the actual condition of the property.
